Interdepartmental degrees

Are you interested in another subject area that you’d like to enrich with a breadth of knowledge about African American and African diaspora studies? Interdepartmental majors give you the opportunity to combine two majors of related interest to complete a degree focused on aspects of each.

We offer four interdepartmental degrees. Think of these as combined degrees, where you take a portion of the requirements for AAADS and a portion of the requirements in another department. You graduate with one degree, giving you expertise in both areas. Our interdepartmental degrees are with English, History, Religious Studies, and Sociology.

Dual degrees

With a dual degree you are able to earn two separate degrees at the same time, achieving a double major. You take courses in AAADS as well as in the curriculum of another degree to major in both programs.

Because many AAAD courses count as electives in other programs while also helping you satisfy GenEd and CASE requirements, this can be fairly easy to coordinate. You do need to work with your academic advisors in both programs to make sure you are meeting the requirements for both degrees.

With careful planning, most students who pursue dual majors within the College of Arts and Sciences are able to complete their degrees in four years.
